In her previous career as a librarian at Harvard’s Widener Library and the Indiana University Libraries, Barbara constantly saw the deterioration and fragility of books both new and old. This experience and her lifelong interest in books ultimately led her to enroll in the two-year bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School, where she was trained in a range of skills in traditional and contemporary binding, enclosures, repair, and restoration.
On completing that program, Barbara joined The Bindery at Miller St. in Somerville, MA, which includes The Three Ring Binders and other independent binders and book artists. This loosely affiliated group shares space, equipment, expertise, and referrals.
Barbara provides custom binding services both to businesses and to individual clients, using archival materials and recognized conservation practices in all her work. She likes to collaborate closely with the client to produce a result that is suitable to the age, style, and history of the object involved, and satisfying to the client.
Barbara’s memberships include the Guild of BookWorkers and the Early Book Society. Her long-held interest in the history of books, printing, and libraries is reflected in her book on the fifteenth-century Swiss printer Johann Amerbach and numerous articles in the field.
See the Gallery for representative examples of Barbara’s work.
